Following Steps

We follow steps every day! Let's find out why the order matters.

What Are Steps?

We follow steps every day! You follow steps when you get dressed. You follow steps when you make breakfast.

Steps go in order. First you do one thing, then the next thing.

If you put your shoes on before your socks, that would be silly! The order matters!

Let's Make a Sandwich!

Making a sandwich has steps. You must do them in the right order!

1 Get the bread.
2 Spread the butter.
3 Add the filling.
4 Put the top on.
5 Cut it in half.

What if you mixed up the steps? You can't spread butter if you don't have bread yet! The order matters.

Steps Are Everywhere!

You follow steps all the time! Here are some more examples.

Brushing Your Teeth

  1. Pick up your toothbrush.
  2. Put toothpaste on it.
  3. Brush your teeth.
  4. Rinse your mouth.

Planting a Seed

  1. Dig a hole.
  2. Put the seed in.
  3. Cover with soil.
  4. Water the soil.

The order matters every time!

You Are Already a Coder!

Following steps in order is what computers do! A computer follows steps one at a time, just like you.

When you follow a recipe, you think like a computer! When you get dressed in the right order, you think like a computer!

If you can follow steps in order, you can think like a coder!

1. What would happen if you mixed up the steps for getting dressed?
