Describing Words (Adjectives)

Adjectives are describing words that tell us more about nouns. They help us paint a picture with words!

What Is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. It tells us what something looks, feels, sounds, smells, or tastes like.

Size

big, tiny, tall, short, huge

Colour

red, blue, green, golden, purple

Feeling

soft, rough, cold, warm, sticky

Sound

loud, quiet, noisy, silent

Number

one, three, many, few, both

Taste

sweet, sour, salty, yummy, bitter

Adjectives Make Writing Better

Compare these two sentences. Which one creates a better picture?

Without adjectives:

The dog ran across the grass.

With adjectives:

The fluffy brown dog ran across the soft green grass.

Adjectives help readers imagine what you are describing!
