Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension means understanding what you read. Good readers think about the text — they find key details and answer questions about it.
Before You Read
- 👁 Look at the title and pictures
- 💭 Think: What might this be about?
- ❓ Ask yourself questions before reading
- 🎯 Set a purpose: “I am reading to find out...”
While You Read
- 🔎 Look for key words
- 💡 Think about what is happening
- ❓ Ask: Who? What? Where? When? Why?
- 👈 Point to the words as you read
After You Read
- 💬 Retell the story in your own words
- 🤔 Answer questions about the text
- 👉 Go back to check your answers
- ❓ Think: Did anything surprise you?
Find It in the Text
When answering comprehension questions, look back in the text for the answer. Key words in the question will help you find the right part of the text to re-read.
Practice Passage: Mia's Dog
Mia has a dog named Biscuit. Biscuit is small, fluffy and golden brown. He loves to run in the park and chase balls.
Every morning, Mia gives Biscuit his breakfast. He eats special dog biscuits with some water. After eating, they go for a walk together.
Biscuit is Mia's best friend. He sleeps at the end of her bed every night.
