Rhyming Words

Words that sound the same at the end are called rhymes. Let's find rhyming pairs!

🎵 What is a Rhyme?

Two words rhyme when they have the same ending sound.

cat → hat → bat → mat

They all end in the same sound: -at

Listen carefully: dog and log rhyme because they both end in -og. The beginning sound is different, but the end sounds the same!

👪 Rhyme Families

A rhyme family (also called a word family) is a group of words that all share the same ending. Here are some common rhyme families:

Worked Examples

Example 1: Does sun rhyme with run?

Listen to the ending: sun ends in -un. Run also ends in -un.

✓ Yes! Sun and run rhyme.

Example 2: Does cake rhyme with lake?

Cake ends in -ake. Lake also ends in -ake.

✓ Yes! Cake and lake rhyme.

Example 3: Does red rhyme with run?

Red ends in -ed. Run ends in -un. These are different!

✗ No! Red and run do not rhyme.

Rhyme

Word Family

A group of words that share the same ending, like the -at family: cat, hat, bat, mat.

Ending Sound

The sound at the end of a word. In dog, the ending sound is -og.

Rhyming Pair

Two words that rhyme together, for example: ring and sing.
