🔁 Synonyms — Same Meaning

A synonym is a word that has the same or very similar meaning as another word. Using synonyms helps us avoid repeating the same words and makes our writing more interesting.

↔ Antonyms — Opposite Meaning

An antonym is a word that has the opposite meaning to another word. Antonyms help us describe contrasts clearly.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Replace a repeated word using synonyms

Boring: "The big bear was very big. It had big paws and a big head."

Better: "The enormous bear was very large. It had massive paws and a huge head."

Synonyms of big were used: enormous, large, massive, huge.

Example 2: Use an antonym to show contrast

"The weather was freezing in the morning, but scorching by the afternoon."

Freezing and scorching are antonyms — they show opposite temperatures.

Example 3: Choosing the right synonym

Instead of "The dog walked slowly," try: "The dog trudged along the path." — Trudged is a synonym for walked slowly that paints a vivid picture.
