Compound Words

Two words joined together to make one new word with its own meaning.

What is a compound word?

A compound word is formed by joining two separate words to create a new word with its own meaning. The new meaning is usually connected to both original words.

sun + glasses

= sunglasses

🦋 + 🦋

butter + fly

= butterfly

⚽ + 🏟️

foot + ball

= football

💡 Key tip

When you see a long word you don't know, try to spot two smaller words hidden inside it — that's often the clue to the meaning!

rain + bow = rainbow fire + place = fireplace cup + cake = cupcake
