Growth Mindset: The Power of Yet

Discover how changing one small word can change the way you learn forever.

Two Ways of Thinking

Did you know that the way you think about learning can change how well you learn? Scientists have discovered that people think about their brains in two very different ways.

Fixed Mindset

  • "I'm just not good at maths."
  • "I'll never be able to do this."
  • "Mistakes mean I'm not smart."
  • "I give up when things are hard."
  • "Smart people don't need to try."

Growth Mindset

  • "I'm not good at maths yet."
  • "I can learn to do this with practice."
  • "Mistakes help my brain grow!"
  • "I keep trying when things are hard."
  • "Everyone can get smarter with effort."

The Magic Word: YET

One tiny word can change everything. When you add "yet" to the end of a sentence, it turns a door that feels closed into one that is wide open!

"I can't ride a bike." "I can't ride a bike yet!"
"I don't understand fractions." "I don't understand fractions yet!"
"I can't spell big words." "I can't spell big words yet!"

Your Brain is Like a Muscle

When you lift weights, your muscles get stronger. Your brain works the same way! Every time you practise something difficult, your brain makes new connections and gets stronger.

1

You try something hard

Your brain works to figure it out

2

You make mistakes

New brain connections form

3

You keep practising

Your brain gets stronger!

Did you know? Scientists can actually see the brain growing when people learn new things! The parts of the brain you use the most become bigger and stronger.

Famous People Who Did Not Give Up

Even the most successful people in the world made lots of mistakes before they succeeded. Here are some amazing examples:

Albert Einstein

He struggled in school and failed his university entrance exam. His teachers said he would "never amount to much." He went on to become one of the greatest scientists in history!

J.K. Rowling

Her Harry Potter book was rejected by 12 publishers before someone said yes. She kept trying, and now she has sold over 500 million books worldwide!

Thomas Edison

It took over 1,000 tries to invent the light bulb. When asked about his failures, he said: "I didn't fail. I just found 1,000 ways that don't work."

Walt Disney

He was fired from a newspaper for "lacking imagination." His first business went bankrupt. He kept going and created one of the most beloved companies in the world!

Mistakes Are Learning Opportunities

When you make a mistake, your brain actually works harder than when you get something right! Mistakes are not something to be afraid of — they are proof that you are trying.

1.

Notice the mistake

"Oops, I got this wrong. That's OK!"

2.

Think about why

"What went wrong? What can I learn from this?"

3.

Try again

"Now I know more, so I can do it better this time!"
