Time: Quarter Hours

An hour has 60 minutes. A quarter of an hour is 15 minutes. Knowing o'clock, quarter past, half past, and quarter to helps us read time accurately.

The minute hand travels all the way around in 60 minutes (one full hour). Here are the four key positions:

Key Vocabulary

quarter — one quarter = 1/4 of a whole. One quarter of 60 minutes = 15 minutes.
half past — 30 minutes past the hour (the minute hand at 6)
quarter past — 15 minutes past the hour (the minute hand at 3)
quarter to — 15 minutes before the next hour (the minute hand at 9)
