Division Strategies

Learn to divide by sharing equally, using arrays, and relating division to known multiplication facts.

Division is sharing a quantity into equal groups (partitive) or finding how many groups fit (quotitive).

Arrays work for division: remove the total and find how many are in each row.

Known multiplication facts are the fastest way to solve division: if 6×4=24, then 24÷6=4.

A remainder is the amount left over when a number does not divide exactly.

The number you are dividing by.

quotient

The answer to a division problem.

remainder

The amount left over after dividing as evenly as possible.
