Data and Dot Plots

Dot plots display data by placing a dot above a number line for each data value, making it easy to see patterns and compare frequencies.

What You Need to Know

Key Concept Diagram

A dot plot uses dots on a number line to show how often each value occurs

Each dot represents one data value (or one person/observation)

Dot plots make it easy to spot the most common value (mode) and the spread of data

Data can be collected through surveys, experiments, or observation and then displayed in a dot plot

Key Vocabulary

Dot plot

A graph that shows data as dots above a number line, one dot per data value

Mode

The value that appears most often in a data set

Frequency

How many times a particular value occurs in a data set

Data

A collection of information, often numbers, gathered for analysis
