Division with Remainders
Division shares a total into equal groups. When division does not come out evenly, we get a remainder — the amount left over.
What You Need to Know
Key Concept Diagram
Division finds how many equal groups can be made from a total
A remainder is what is left over when sharing equally is not exact
We write remainders using "r", e.g. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2
The remainder is always smaller than the divisor
Key Vocabulary
Dividend
The number being divided
Divisor
The number you are dividing by
Quotient
The result (answer) of a division
Remainder
The amount left over when division is not exact
