Factors and Multiples

Factors are numbers that divide evenly into another number, while multiples are the results of multiplying a number by whole numbers.

A factor of a number divides into it with no remainder (e.g. 3 is a factor of 12)

Every number has at least two factors: 1 and itself

A multiple of a number is found by multiplying it by 1, 2, 3, … (e.g. multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16 …)

Common factors and common multiples are shared by two or more numbers

Key Vocabulary

Factor

A whole number that divides exactly into another number with no remainder

Multiple

The product of a number and any whole number (e.g. 6, 12, 18 are multiples of 6)

Common factor

A factor shared by two or more numbers (e.g. 4 is a common factor of 8 and 12)

Divisible

A number is divisible by another if there is no remainder after dividing
