Fractions on a Number Line
Number lines help us see fractions between whole numbers. We divide each unit into equal parts to show halves, thirds, quarters and more.
What You Need to Know
Key Concept Diagram
A unit on a number line is divided into equal parts to show fractions
Halves divide each unit into 2 equal parts, quarters into 4
Fractions greater than 1 (like 3/2) can be shown beyond 1 on the line
Comparing fractions is easier when they are shown on a number line
Key Vocabulary
Number line
A line with equally spaced numbers showing order and value
Unit fraction
A fraction with 1 as the numerator, such as 1/2 or 1/4
Mixed number
A number with a whole number and a fraction, like 1¾
Benchmark fraction
A common fraction used for estimating, like 1/2 or 1/4

Question 1
Where is 3/4 on a number line from 0 to 1?
Question 2
Which fraction is between 1/4 and 3/4?
Question 3
On a number line, where would 5/4 be placed?
The denominator is 4, so each whole is split into 4 quarters.
That means 4/4 = 1 whole (not 5/5 — the bottom number tells us how many parts make a whole).
So 5/4 = 4/4 + 1/4 = 1 whole and 1 quarter.
Each section is one quarter (1/4). 5/4 is the 5th quarter — just past 1.
