Place Value to Millions

Place value tells us the value of each digit in a number. In Year 4 we work with numbers up to and beyond 100,000.

The places are: millions, hundred-thousands, ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, ones

Writing numbers in expanded form shows the value of each digit

Comparing large numbers: look at the highest place value first

Expanded form

Writing a number showing the value of each digit, e.g. 3000+200+50+4

Standard form

The usual way to write a number using digits, e.g. 3254
