Fractions and Percentages

Year 5 students connect fractions, decimals, and percentages as three equivalent ways to express parts of a whole, and convert between them.

What You Need to Know

Key Concept Diagram

Percent means "out of one hundred"; 50% means 50 out of 100 or the fraction 50/100

To convert a fraction to a percentage, find an equivalent fraction with denominator 100

Common equivalences: 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%, 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, 3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

Percentages are used to describe discounts, test scores, and chance in everyday life
