Decimals and Fractions

Decimals and fractions are two ways to represent numbers between whole numbers. Converting between them and performing operations with both is an essential Year 7 skill.

What You Need to Know

Key Concept Diagram

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator: 3/4 = 0.75

To convert a terminating decimal to a fraction, use the place value as the denominator: 0.6 = 6/10 = 3/5

Recurring decimals have digits that repeat indefinitely, e.g. 1/3 = 0.333...

Ordering decimals and fractions on a number line requires a common format

Terminating decimal

Numerator

The top number in a fraction — shows how many parts are taken

Denominator

The bottom number in a fraction — shows the total number of equal parts
