Fraction Operations
Year 7 fraction work extends to all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with both proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers.

To add or subtract fractions, find a common denominator first
To multiply fractions: multiply numerators together and denominators together
To divide fractions: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction (flip and multiply)
Mixed numbers must be converted to improper fractions before multiplying or dividing
Key Vocabulary
Proper fraction
A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator, e.g. 3/5
Improper fraction
A fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, e.g. 7/3
Mixed number
A number made up of a whole number and a proper fraction, e.g. 2 and 1/4
Reciprocal
The reciprocal of a/b is b/a; the product of a number and its reciprocal is always 1
