This is a second practice set with a brand-new passage. Practise reading a short text and answering comprehension questions, just like in the real NAPLAN Reading test.

Exam Tips for Year 3 Reading

1. Read the WHOLE text first — do not start answering questions until you have read the entire passage.

2. Look back at the text — always go back and find the answer in the passage. Do not guess from memory.

3. Eliminate wrong options — cross out answers you know are wrong, then choose from what is left.

4. Watch for tricky words — words like "not", "best", "most likely" change what the question is really asking.

The Great Pumpkin Surprise

On Tuesday morning, Ms. Patel's class walked out to the school vegetable garden for their weekly gardening lesson. Ben knelt down beside the pumpkin patch, ready to pull out the weeds growing between the leafy green vines. As he reached for a tangle of grass, something caught his eye — a huge, round shape hidden under the wide leaves.

"Ms. Patel, come and look!" Ben called out, waving his muddy hands.

The whole class gathered around. Hidden beneath the leaves was an enormous orange pumpkin, bigger than a soccer ball. Nobody remembered seeing it grow so large.

"We must have missed it because the leaves were covering it," said Ms. Patel, kneeling down to measure it with her hands. "This is the biggest pumpkin our garden has ever grown!"

Ben beamed with pride. He had watered that very plant every week since spring. The class decided to enter the pumpkin in the town fair's Biggest Vegetable competition. As they carried it carefully back to the classroom, Ben could not stop smiling. All those weeks of watering had finally paid off.
