Year 5 NAPLAN Language Conventions Practice — Set 2

This is a second practice set with 10 brand-new questions on complex sentences, word classes, vocabulary and punctuation for the Year 5 NAPLAN Language Conventions assessment.

Exam Tips for Year 5 Language Conventions

1. Read the whole sentence before choosing — check how the clauses connect to each other.
2. Spot the subordinating conjunction — words like "because," "although" and "since" signal a dependent clause.
3. Name the word class — knowing whether a word is a noun, verb, adjective or adverb helps you spot the correct answer.
4. Apostrophe check — decide whether it shows ownership (the teachers' staffroom) or a contraction (shouldn't = should not).

What This Test Covers

The Language Conventions test has about 50 questions in 45 minutes. It tests three main areas:

Spelling

Commonly misspelled words, homophones, tricky word endings like -tion, -sion, -ible, -able.

Grammar

Word classes, complex sentences with subordinate clauses, relative pronouns, precise vocabulary choices.

Punctuation

Apostrophes for possession and contraction, commas around extra information in complex sentences, quotation marks.

Common Traps for Year 5 Students

⚠ Comma splices — joining two complete sentences with just a comma instead of a conjunction or full stop
⚠ who / which — use "who" for people, "which" for things and animals
⚠ Apostrophe placement — the teacher's desk (one teacher) vs the teachers' desks (more than one teacher)
⚠ Sentence fragments — a subordinate clause on its own is not a complete sentence
