Year 7 NAPLAN Language Conventions Practice — Set 2

A second practice set with 10 brand-new questions covering spelling, grammar and punctuation skills tested in the Year 7 NAPLAN Language Conventions assessment — great for extra revision after completing Set 1.

Exam Tips for Year 7 Language Conventions

1. Find the true subject — ignore words between the subject and verb when checking agreement.
2. Check who is doing the action — active voice puts the doer first, passive voice puts the receiver first.
3. Watch for look-alike words — commonly confused words often sound similar but mean very different things.
4. Keep modifiers close — a describing phrase should sit right next to the thing it describes.

What This Test Covers

The Language Conventions test has about 50 questions in 45 minutes. It tests three main areas:

Spelling

Commonly confused words, prefixes and suffixes, tricky spelling patterns.

Grammar

Subject-verb agreement, active vs passive voice, correct placement of modifiers.

Punctuation

Apostrophes, commas, coordinating conjunctions and hyphens.

Common Traps for Year 7 Students

principal / principle — principal = head of school or main, principle = a rule or belief
its / it's — its = belonging to it, it's = it is / it has
Agreement across a phrase — "The basket of apples was left out" (basket, not apples, is the subject)
Comma splices — two complete sentences need a conjunction or full stop, not just a comma
