Year 9 NAPLAN Numeracy

Year 9 NAPLAN Numeracy Prep — Set 2

This is a second practice set with 10 brand-new questions covering real numbers & surds, financial maths, algebra, linear and non-linear relationships, measurement, trigonometry, similarity, statistics and probability.

Exam Tips for Year 9 Numeracy

1. Show full working for non-calculator questions — even if you get the answer wrong, clear working may guide you to the right process.
2. Use estimation — before committing to an answer, estimate to see if your result is in the right ballpark.
3. Manage time wisely — the test is adaptive. Do not panic on hard questions; the difficulty adjusts based on your answers.
4. Read graphs and tables carefully — check axis labels, scales, and units before interpreting data.

Calculator sections: Some questions allow an on-screen calculator, others do not. Practise mental maths strategies for non-calculator sections.

Knowledge Check (Set 2)

NAPLAN Style

10 brand-new questions covering a fresh mix of topics, mixing calculator and non-calculator sections.

Score: 0 / 0

Question 1

Non-calculator — Real Numbers & Surds

Simplify: √72

Question 2

Calculator allowed — Financial Mathematics

Ben invests $1,500 at 5% per annum compound interest, compounded annually, for 2 years. What is the total value of the investment, to the nearest cent?

Question 3

Non-calculator — Expanding & Factorising

Factorise: x² + 7x + 10

Question 4

Non-calculator — Linear Relationships

A line passes through the points (1, 2) and (4, 11). What is the gradient of the line?

Question 5

Non-calculator — Non-Linear Relationships

What is the y-intercept of the parabola y = x² - 4x - 5?

Question 6

Calculator allowed — Surface Area & Volume

A rectangular prism (box) has length 8 cm, width 5 cm and height 3 cm. What is its volume?

Question 7

Calculator allowed — Trigonometry

In a right-angled triangle, the hypotenuse is 15 cm and one angle is 40°. Using sin(40°) = 0.643, find the length of the side opposite the 40° angle. Round to one decimal place.

Question 8

Calculator allowed — Similarity

Triangle ABC is similar to triangle DEF. Side AB = 6 cm corresponds to side DE = 9 cm. If side BC = 8 cm, what is the length of the corresponding side EF?

Question 9

Non-calculator — Statistics

Here are the ages (in years) of 7 people in a family:

12, 45, 8, 39, 41, 15, 10

What is the median age?

Question 10

Non-calculator — Probability

A bag contains 4 red marbles and 6 blue marbles. A marble is drawn at random, its colour noted, then put back in the bag before a second marble is drawn. What is the probability that both marbles drawn are red?
