Our Five Senses
We use our senses every single day! Let's explore all five of them.
What Are Our Senses? 🤔
We have five senses that help us learn about the world around us. Each sense uses a different part of our body!
Sight
We use our eyes to see colours, shapes and things around us.
Hearing
We use our ears to hear sounds like music and voices.
Touch
We use our skin to feel if things are soft, hard, hot or cold.
Taste
We use our tongue to taste sweet, sour, salty and yummy food!
Smell
We use our nose to smell flowers, food and the rain!
All Together!
We use all our senses together to understand the world.
Senses in Action! 🌿
Let's see how we use our senses when we visit a beautiful Australian beach!
👀 I can SEE...
the blue waves, golden sand, and seagulls flying.
👂 I can HEAR...
the waves crashing and seagulls calling out.
🤏 I can FEEL...
the warm sand between my toes and the cool water.
👁 I can SMELL...
the salty sea air and sunscreen on my skin.
💡 Think About It!
Can you taste something at the beach? What might it taste like? Think of a yummy snack you might eat there!
Worked Examples 🔍
Which sense do you use? Let's work through some examples together!
Example 1: A strawberry
You pick up a strawberry. You use your eyes (sight) to see it is red. You use your nose (smell) to sniff its sweet smell. You use your tongue (taste) to taste how sweet and juicy it is. You use your skin (touch) to feel its bumpy surface.
Example 2: A gum tree
You walk past a big gum tree. You use your eyes to see the long, thin leaves and grey bark. You use your nose to smell the fresh eucalyptus scent. You use your skin to feel the rough bark. You might use your ears to hear leaves rustling in the wind!
Example 3: A cockatoo
A white cockatoo lands near you in the park. You use your eyes to see its bright yellow crest and white feathers. You use your ears to hear its very loud squawk! You would NOT taste or smell the cockatoo — it might fly away!
