Sound and Vibration
Sound is made when something vibrates. These vibrations travel through the air and into our ears!
What is sound?
Sound is a type of energy. It is made when something vibrates (shakes back and forth very fast). These vibrations push the air around them, making waves that travel to our ears.
What is vibration?
Vibration is the quick shaking movement that makes sound. Place your hand gently on your throat when you talk — you can feel the vibrations! A drum vibrates when you hit it. A guitar string vibrates when you pluck it.
Loud and soft sounds
A bigger vibration makes a louder sound. A smaller vibration makes a softer sound. We measure loudness in decibels (dB). A whisper is about 30 dB; a jet engine can be 140 dB (very dangerous!).
High and low pitch
Pitch is how high or low a sound is. A fast vibration makes a high-pitched sound (like a bird singing). A slow vibration makes a low-pitched sound (like a drum or a tuba).

Lesson Summary
- ✓Sound is made when something vibrates (shakes back and forth).
- ✓Vibrations travel through the air as waves to reach our ears.
- ✓Volume = how loud or soft (bigger vibration = louder). Pitch = how high or low (faster vibration = higher pitch).
- ✓All musical instruments make sound through vibration: strings, drumheads, air columns.
