The Water Cycle

Water continuously moves between the Earth's surface and the atmosphere in a cycle. The water cycle includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

What You Need to Know

Key Concept Diagram

Evaporation: liquid water turns into water vapour when heated by the sun

Condensation: water vapour cools and turns back into liquid droplets, forming clouds

Precipitation: water falls from clouds as rain, snow, sleet, or hail

Collection: water collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the cycle repeats

Key Vocabulary

Evaporation

The process where liquid water turns into water vapour (gas) when heated

Condensation

The process where water vapour cools and turns into liquid water droplets

Precipitation

Water that falls from clouds in any form: rain, snow, sleet, or hail

Water cycle

The continuous movement of water between Earth's surface and atmosphere
