Exam Tips for GPS Paper 2

1. Homophones need the sentence — the spelling depends entirely on what the word means in context.

2. Doubling rules depend on where the stress falls in the word, not just how it looks.

3. Keep a running list of the words you get wrong — the statutory list repeats the same handful of traps.

4. Break long words into syllables — government becomes gov-ern-ment, much easier to spell piece by piece.

ambitious, delicious, vicious — the same “sh” sound pattern.

official, essential, financial.

who's/whose, past/passed, and more affect/effect-style pairs.

island, Wednesday-style words with letters that aren't pronounced.

-ably/-ibly, and doubling consonants when the stress stays put.

More Year 5–6 words every pupil is expected to spell, e.g. “government.”

●-cious/-tious & -cial/-tial: -cial and -cious are more common; -tial and -tious are the exceptions to learn as a list.
●affect vs effect: affect is nearly always the verb (an action).
●whose vs who's: whose = possession; who's = "who is."
●past vs passed: passed is the verb (an action); past describes time or position.
●Doubling before -ing/-ed: double the final consonant when the stress stays on that syllable (referring).
●Statutory word list: keep practising the full Year 5–6 list — the same tricky words come up again and again.
