Simple Patterns

Patterns are everywhere! Let's learn to spot them and guess what comes next.

What Is a Pattern?

A pattern is something that repeats! It goes over and over again.

🔴 🔵 🔴 🔵

Red, blue, red, blue -- that's a pattern!

👏 🥾 👏 🥾

Clap, stomp, clap, stomp -- that's a pattern too!

Colour and Shape Patterns

You can make patterns with colours and shapes! Look at these patterns and guess what comes next.

⚫ ⬛ ⚫ ⬛ ❓

Circle, square, circle, square -- what comes next? A circle!

🟢 🟡 🟢 🟡 ❓

Green, yellow, green, yellow -- what comes next? Green!

▲ ▲ ⚫ ▲ ▲ ⚫ ❓ ❓

Triangle, triangle, circle, triangle, triangle, circle -- what comes next? Triangle, triangle!

Patterns in Our World

Patterns are everywhere in the world around you!

☀️ 🌙

Day and Night

Day, night, day, night -- it repeats!

🌸 ☀️ 🍂 ❄️

Seasons

Spring, summer, autumn, winter -- then it starts again!

📅

Days of the Week

Monday to Sunday -- then it repeats!

Why Patterns Matter in Coding

Computers love patterns! When a computer sees a pattern, it can guess what comes next.

You can guess what comes next too! If you see red, blue, red, blue -- you know the next one is red!

Spotting patterns is a superpower! Computers use patterns to do amazing things, and so can you!

Think About It

1. Can you clap a pattern for a friend to copy?

2. What pattern do you see in the days of the week?

3. Can you make a pattern with 3 colours?
