Rhythm and Counting

Discover how music uses beats and patterns. Learn to count to 4 and clap along with rhythms!

What Is Rhythm?

Rhythm is a pattern of sounds and silences. When you clap along to a song, you are following the rhythm! Rhythm makes music feel alive because it gives music its beat.

Counting Beats

Most music counts in groups of 4: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4. Try clapping along! Each number is one beat. Counting beats helps musicians play together at the same speed.

Clap Patterns

Try this: clap, clap, rest, clap. That is a pattern! The "rest" means you stay silent for one beat. Patterns make rhythms interesting because they mix sounds and silences.

Try this pattern:

REST

Rhythm Is Everywhere

Your heartbeat is a rhythm. Walking has a rhythm. Even a ticking clock has a rhythm! Music uses rhythm to make you want to move, dance, and tap your feet.
