Symmetry Patterns

Learn about mirror images and matching halves. Discover symmetry in nature, art, and everyday objects!

What Is Symmetry?

Symmetry means both sides look the same. If you fold a butterfly down the middle, both wings match! A shape with symmetry has a mirror image on each side.

The Line of Symmetry

The imaginary line down the middle is called the line of symmetry. It splits the shape into two matching halves. Some shapes have one line of symmetry, and some have many!

Circle

Many lines of symmetry!

Square

4 lines of symmetry

Half Circle

1 line of symmetry

Symmetry in Nature

Butterflies, flowers, leaves, and faces all have symmetry. Look in a mirror — your face is (almost!) symmetrical because the left side matches the right side.

Making Symmetry Art

Fold a piece of paper in half. Paint on one side, then press the halves together. Open it up — surprise! You have made a symmetrical picture. This works because the paint copies itself onto the other side.

Try it yourself:

  1. Fold a piece of paper in half.
  2. Open it up and paint on just one side.
  3. Fold it again and press down firmly.
  4. Open it — you have symmetry art!

Think About It

Can you find 3 things in your classroom that are symmetrical?

Is the letter A symmetrical? What about the letter B?

What would happen if a butterfly's wings were different on each side?
