Music and Fractions
Discover how music is built with fractions! Every note has a fraction value, and a bar of music must add up to one whole.
Musical Notes Are Fractions
In music, notes tell us how long to play a sound. Each note type is a fraction of a whole note. Just like cutting a pizza into equal pieces!
Whole Note
(Semibreve)
Fills the whole bar
Half Note
(Minim)
Fills half the bar
Quarter Note
(Crotchet)
Fills a quarter of the bar
Eighth Note
(Quaver)
Fills an eighth of the bar
Key Concept
In 4/4 time (the most common time signature), every bar of music must add up to exactly 1 whole. Just like fractions: the notes in a bar must sum to 1!
Combining Notes to Fill a Bar
A bar in 4/4 time = 1 whole. Here are some ways to fill a bar:
Bar 1: Four quarter notes
1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 = 1 whole bar
Bar 2: One half note + two quarter notes
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 = 1 whole bar
Bar 3: One half note + one quarter note + two eighth notes
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 4/8 + 2/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 8/8 = 1 whole bar
Rhythm Patterns as Fraction Problems
Clap these rhythms! Each pattern fills exactly one bar.
Pattern 1: "Walk, Walk, Walk, Walk"
4 steady beats = 4 quarter notes
1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 1
Pattern 2: "Sliiide, Walk, Walk"
1 long note + 2 shorter notes = half note + 2 quarter notes
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 1
Pattern 3: "Walk, Jog-Jog, Jog-Jog, Walk"
1 quarter + 2 eighths + 2 eighths + 1 quarter
1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/4 = 1
