Writing My First Sentences

Let's learn how to write our very own sentences!

Sentence Starters

Not sure how to begin? Use a sentence starter! These handy beginnings help you write your very own sentences.

Starter

I like...

🐱 I like cats.

🍦 I like ice cream.

⚽ I like playing football.

🌳 I can see a big tree.

Adding Describing Words

Describing words (adjectives) make our sentences more interesting! They tell us more about something.

Without a describing word:

The cat sat on the mat.

With a describing word:

The fluffy cat sat on the red mat. 🐱

Much more interesting!

Without a describing word:

I see a dog.

With a describing word:

I see a big, brown dog. 🐶

Now we know what the dog looks like!

Colour words

red, blue, green, yellow, pink

Size words

big, small, tiny, tall, long

Feeling words

happy, sad, scared, brave, kind

Touch words

soft, hard, smooth, rough, furry

Write About the Picture!

Look at each picture. Can you write a sentence about what you see? Use a sentence starter and a describing word!

A happy dog in the park

Try writing:

"I can see a happy dog."

"The brown dog is running."

A sunny day

Try writing:

"The sun is big and yellow."

"I like sunny days."

🍳

Yummy food

Try writing:

"I like yummy pancakes."

"The pancakes are hot."

Key Vocabulary

Sentence Starter

The beginning of a sentence, like "I like..." or "I can see...".

Describing Word (Adjective)

A word that tells us more about something, like big, red, happy, or soft.

Capital Letter

The big letter at the start of every sentence. Also used for names, like Sam.

Full Stop

The dot at the end of every sentence. It tells us to stop reading.

Worked Examples

Let's see how to make sentences better!

Example 1: Complete the sentence

I like ________.

I like chocolate cake.

We added "chocolate cake" to finish the sentence. Yum!

Example 2: Add a describing word

The dog is ________.

The dog is furry and brown.

We used two describing words to tell us what the dog looks like!

Example 3: Choose the best word

The ________ flower grew in the garden.

running pretty jumped

The pretty flower grew in the garden.

"Pretty" is a describing word. "Running" and "jumped" are doing words, not describing words.
