Year 3 NAPLAN Reading

Year 3 NAPLAN Reading Prep

Practise reading a short text and answering comprehension questions, just like in the real NAPLAN Reading test.

Exam Tips for Year 3 Reading

1. Read the WHOLE text first — do not start answering questions until you have read the entire passage.
2. Look back at the text — always go back and find the answer in the passage. Do not guess from memory.
3. Eliminate wrong options — cross out answers you know are wrong, then choose from what is left.
4. Watch for tricky words — words like "not", "best", "most likely" change what the question is really asking.

Reading Passage

The Rockpool Adventure

Last Saturday, Maya and her dad walked down the steep, rocky path to Lighthouse Beach. It was low tide, and the rocks along the shoreline were covered with clusters of tiny barnacles. Maya had brought a plastic bucket and a magnifying glass.

"Look carefully and you will find a whole world hiding in the rockpools," Dad said with a grin.

Maya crouched beside a shallow pool and peered in. At first she saw only green seaweed swaying gently in the water. Then a small hermit crab scuttled across the sandy bottom, carrying its borrowed shell on its back. Maya gasped with delight.

"I found one!" she whispered, not wanting to scare it away.

Over the next hour, Maya discovered a bright orange sea star clinging to a rock, three tiny silver fish darting between the weeds, and a shy sea anemone that closed up tight when she touched it softly with her finger. By the time the tide started coming in, Maya did not want to leave. She had filled her bucket with memories, not creatures, and she could not wait to come back.
