Animal Habitats
Where do animals live? Let's explore different habitats around the world!
What Is a Habitat?
A habitat is the natural home where an animal or plant lives. It gives the animal everything it needs: food, water, shelter, and space.
Different animals need different habitats. A fish needs water, but a camel needs a dry, sandy desert!
Types of Habitats
Ocean
Saltwater covers most of our planet. It is home to thousands of creatures.
Desert
Very hot and dry with little rain. Animals must save water to survive.
Rainforest
Warm, wet, and full of tall trees. Home to more species than any other habitat!
Arctic (Polar)
Freezing cold with ice and snow. Animals have thick fur or blubber to stay warm.
Grassland (Savanna)
Wide open spaces covered in grass. Large animals roam freely here.
How Animals Fit Their Habitat
Animals have special features called adaptations that help them survive in their habitat.
🐻 Polar Bear
Thick white fur keeps it warm and camouflaged in the snow.
🐦 Duck
Webbed feet help it swim through water easily.
🐪 Camel
Humps store fat for energy when there is no food or water.
🐵 Monkey
Long tail helps it grip branches and swing through trees.
💡 Think About It!
Could a polar bear live in the desert? Why or why not? What makes you say that?
🧪 Try It at Home!
Mini Habitat Investigation
Go outside and find a small habitat near your home.
- Look under a rock, in a garden, or near a pond
- What tiny creatures can you find? (Bugs, worms, snails...)
- What food and shelter does this habitat provide?
- Draw what you see and label it
- Think: why do these creatures live here and not somewhere else?
