Understanding NAPLAN

What Is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy) is Australia's standardised assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. Since 2023, NAPLAN is fully online and uses an adaptive format — questions get harder or easier based on your child's responses.

Reading

Comprehension of fiction, non-fiction, and informational texts

Writing

Persuasive or narrative writing assessed on structure, ideas, and language

Language Conventions

Spelling, grammar, and punctuation knowledge

Numeracy

Number, measurement, geometry, statistics, and algebra

Adaptive format: NAPLAN Online uses a tailored (adaptive) test design. After an initial set of questions, students receive a second set targeted to their ability level. This means every student gets questions that are appropriately challenging — and results are more accurate than the old paper-based test.

The Problem

Why Most NAPLAN Prep Fails

The Cramming Approach

  • Starts 2-3 weeks before the test
  • Drills practice papers without understanding
  • Skips over knowledge gaps entirely
  • Increases anxiety and stress
  • Short-term memorisation, quickly forgotten

The BrightPath Approach

  • Starts with a diagnostic to find gaps
  • Fills gaps with personalised, mastery-based lessons
  • Builds genuine understanding, not memorisation
  • Reduces anxiety through preparation and confidence
  • Long-lasting skills that benefit beyond NAPLAN

NAPLAN doesn't test what your child crammed last week. It tests accumulated knowledge and skills built over years. That's why the most effective NAPLAN preparation is to find where the gaps are — and fill them properly.

Our NAPLAN Approach

Three Phases to NAPLAN Success

A structured, personalised program that builds genuine confidence — not surface-level test tricks.

1

Diagnose

Our free diagnostic assessment pinpoints exactly where your child's knowledge gaps are — even gaps from previous year levels that are holding them back.

  • Free — no obligation
  • Covers Maths and English
  • Detailed report for parents
2

Remediate

Personalised lessons target your child's specific gaps. If a Year 5 student has Year 3 fractions gaps, we go back and fill them — properly — before moving forward.

  • Mastery-based progression
  • Interactive, engaging lessons
  • Self-paced — no pressure
3

Prepare

Once foundations are solid, students tackle NAPLAN-style practice tests. They get familiar with the format, timing, and question types — building test confidence.

  • 200+ NAPLAN-style practice tests
  • Mirrors adaptive online format
  • Detailed results and explanations
