Parts of a Plant

Plants have different parts that each do an important job. Let's explore roots, stem, leaves, flowers, and seeds!

🌿 The Five Main Parts

🌿

Roots

Found underground. Roots hold the plant in the soil so it doesn't fall over. They also absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

Example: carrot, beetroot (edible roots!)
🌳

Stem

The stalk of the plant. It holds the plant upright and carries water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves and flowers.

Example: the trunk of a tree is a very thick stem!
🍁

Leaves

Leaves are the plant's "kitchen". They capture sunlight and air to make food for the plant through photosynthesis.

Example: gum leaves, spinach, cabbage
🌸

Flower

Flowers are colourful and fragrant to attract insects like bees. When insects visit, they spread pollen, which allows the plant to make seeds.

Example: wattle flowers, rose, sunflower
🌻

Seeds

Seeds can grow into new plants. They contain everything needed to start a new plant. Seeds are often found inside fruits.

Example: apple seeds, sunflower seeds, acorns
🍎

Fruit

Fruit grows around seeds to protect them. Animals eat the fruit and spread the seeds to new places through their droppings!

Example: apple, mango, strawberry, tomato

How It All Works Together

  1. The roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
  2. The stem carries the water up to the leaves.
  3. The leaves capture sunlight and air to make food.
  4. The flower attracts bees to spread pollen.
  5. After pollination, seeds form and can grow into new plants.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Why do roots grow underground?

Roots grow underground because that is where water and nutrients are found in the soil. They also anchor the plant so it does not blow over in the wind.

✓ Roots have two jobs: absorb water/nutrients AND anchor the plant.

Example 2: Why are flowers brightly coloured?

Bright colours and sweet smells attract bees and other insects. When insects visit a flower, pollen sticks to them. They carry the pollen to other flowers, which allows seeds to form.

✓ Flowers are colourful to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Example 3: What part of the plant do we eat when we eat an apple?

When you eat an apple, you eat the fruit. Inside the apple are seeds — if you plant one, a new apple tree could grow!

✓ Fruit protects and carries seeds so new plants can grow.

Key Vocabulary

Photosynthesis

The process where leaves use sunlight, water, and air to make food for the plant.

Nutrients

Tiny amounts of goodness in the soil that help plants grow strong and healthy.

Pollen

A fine powder made by flowers. When bees carry pollen from flower to flower, new seeds can form.

Absorb

To soak up or take in liquid. Roots absorb water from the soil like a sponge.
